How many days until summer: June solstice times, 2027 to 2031
The first day of summer is the day of the June solstice. Each year the moment comes nearly 6 hours later on the clock, and every leap day pulls it back by a full day. Dates and times are in your time zone.

When does summer start? The June solstice
Summer begins at the June solstice, when the Sun reaches its northernmost point over the Tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. NASA notes that people standing on that line at local noon cast no shadow at all. In 2027, the solstice comes at 10:11 AM EDT on Monday, June 21, 2027, or 14:11 UTC on June 21, 2027.
A late-evening solstice on U.S. clocks is already the next day in UTC. In 2025 the solstice came at 10:42 PM EDT on June 20, which was 02:42 UTC on June 21, so New York and London marked summer on different dates.
The longest day of the year
North of the tropics, which covers the 48 contiguous states and Alaska, the solstice day brings the most daylight of the year. After it, the Sun’s noon path drifts south again and the days shorten, slowly at first. The shortest day comes six months later, and the winter solstice countdown runs to it.
Meteorological summer starts June 1
Weather services count summer as June, July and August: 92 days that begin nearly three weeks before the solstice. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) uses those whole months because they follow the yearly temperature cycle and make one summer easy to compare with the next. Astronomical summer, the one this page counts to, runs from the June solstice to the September equinox.
Why astronomical summer is the longest season
Earth reaches aphelion, its farthest point from the Sun, in early July, and moves most slowly along its orbit there. Northern summer spans that slow stretch, so it outlasts the other three seasons; the figure under the clock gives the coming summer’s length to the hour. Distance doesn’t make it warm: NASA credits the 23.5-degree tilt of Earth’s axis, which leans the Northern Hemisphere toward the Sun in June.
South of the equator the same June solstice starts winter. Someone in Sydney or Buenos Aires waiting for summer needs the December solstice instead. After summer, the first day of fall is next.
Frequently asked questions
How many more days until summer break?
That depends on your school's last day, which each district sets in its own calendar. Enter that date in the days until a date calculator for an exact count.
Is the first day of summer June 20 or June 21?
Either, depending on the year and your zone. In Eastern Time it was June 20 in 2024 and 2025 and June 21 in 2026, and it is June 21 again in 2027; Guam can reach June 22.
