The start date counts as the first day and today does not, because today is not over yet, so a date of yesterday gives 1 day. Trackers that call the start date “day 1” run one day ahead of this count. Turn on Include today to match them. The guide to when both dates count shows which uses add the extra day.
Business days leave out weekends and the 11 federal holidays on the days they are observed. January 2026 has 22 weekdays, and New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day take it down to 20.

Why does January 31 to February 28 count as one month?
February has no 31st, so its last day stands in as one month after January 31. Only the months figure is affected: the total stays 28 days in 2026.
