Split the range at month ends. For March 15 to June 10, 2026:

1. Days left in March after the 15th: 31 − 15 = 16.
2. Full months between: April has 30 days and May has 31, so 61.
3. Days into June: 10.

The total is 16 + 61 + 10 = 87 days, or 88 when both dates count. Ranges of several years go faster year by year: 365 days each, plus 1 for every February 29 inside the range. Day-of-year numbers shorten a count inside one year, and the guide to counting days by hand works through more cases.

Should you include the end date?

Hotels count nights, so a stay ends without counting the checkout day. Leave requests and event passes count days, so the last day is part of the total. The two counts always differ by exactly 1.

Weeks between dates

Divide the day count by 7: the whole number is the weeks and the remainder is the extra days. March 15 to June 10, 2026 is 87 days, which is 12 weeks and 3 days.

Over a whole year the remainder shows: 365 days make 52 weeks and 1 day, and 366 days make 52 weeks and 2 days. The calculator counts 7-day blocks, not calendar weeks. Friday, January 9 to Monday, January 12, 2026 is 3 days and 0 full weeks, although it touches 2 calendar weeks.

Months between dates: years, months and days

Months run from 28 to 31 days, so a years, months and days breakdown needs a rule for month ends. The calculator steps forward one calendar month at a time from the start date, and a step that lands past the end of a short month stops on its last day. Under this rule, one month after January 31 is February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. That is why four different totals share one breakdown:

Leap days follow the same rule. February 29, 2028 to February 28, 2029 is 1 year (365 days), and February 29, 2028 to March 1, 2029 is 1 year and 1 day (366 days). Tools that count months backward from the end date can show a different breakdown with the same total, so use the day count when an exact length matters.

Business days between dates and federal holidays

Business days here are Monday to Friday, minus the 11 federal holidays on the days they are observed. The holidays come from 5 U.S.C. 6103, the federal law that lists them, and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sets the weekend rule: a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before, and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after.

Independence Day 2026 fell on a Saturday, so it was observed on Friday, July 3. Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 10, 2026 holds 9 weekdays but 8 business days. With Skip federal holidays in business days turned off, the count is 9.

A year can have 10, 11 or 12 observed holidays, because a Saturday New Year’s Day is observed on December 31 of the year before. Martin Luther King Jr. Day counts from 1986 and Juneteenth from 2021. State holidays, Inauguration Day and extra closures ordered by the President stay in the count.

Counting days between dates in Excel or Google Sheets

Spreadsheets store each date as a serial number, so subtracting the start date from the end date returns the days between them, the same count as this calculator’s default. With March 15, 2026 in A2 and June 10, 2026 in B2:

NETWORKDAYS counts both the start date and the end date, so it matches this calculator with Include end date on. DATEDIF returns a #NUM! error when the start date is after the end date. Microsoft advises against its “MD” unit, which can return a negative number, a zero or a wrong result.
